I have learned much much more than I ever expected to from this class. Going into it I thought we were just going to be reading a bunch of books written by female authors or learn about things I wouldn’t quite remember. I was wrong. Taking a look in depth on the gender stereotypes and how society’s views affect our own outlook really put a lot of my every day experiences into perspective. For the first time in many years at ‘Iolani I thoroughly enjoyed reading the novels we read. Like Water for Chocolate was an absolutely amazing book and constantly kept our class discussing. The Color Purple is a book that I had never read but knew it was a classic. I was glad I was able to finally read it and it brought up nearly all of society’s controversial issues. Being able to take both of these stories and write personal essays about similar topics was interesting and fun because it brought the novels closer to home for me. I can take away so much from this class including all the knowledge from current even topics as well as the responsibility I learned I have as women to represent myself well and to be a strong empowered woman. I will take this knowledge with me as I go off to college and into the real world where what I do begins to really matter in society. What my final project taught me was something I didn’t think I would learn for a long time. I learned that it is okay to do something out of the ordinary even if people judge you because women who just follow the trends never really do anything amazing. I want to do something amazing in my future and make a difference. I want to take another Women Studies class in college and continue to learn about my role as a women in society.
